PEUGEOT OXIA: The car that was far ahead of its time.

Updated: Aug 31, 2020

GALLERY

It is a supercar from a french brand "PEUGEOT" with a strange name "OXIA". The name Oxia to this car is derived from a place in planet "MARS" where both Longitude and Latitude are Zero(0). The Oxia was launched in the year of 1988 in the Paris Motor Show as a concept with a very futuristic design and a sleek Aerodynamic physique. But there were lots of hardships for the Peugeot to make Oxia into a production model.

The '80s were iconic for Peugeot in which they had one of the best rally cars in Group-B, the "PEUGEOT 205 T16" that surpassed the Audi Quattro in WRC and "PEUGEOT WM P88" was creating records in 24 Hrs of Le Mans by recording 405 Kmph of top speed. It is the fastest figure in Le Mans history till now. Nowadays the top speed wabbles around 350 Kmph because the circuit of Le Mans nowadays does not have long straights like they were in the '80s.

Though the car was not meant to be a sportscar but these figures were not seemed to be. Officially, Peugeot expected that Oxia could reach a top speed of 187 Mph but during a test run in NARDO CIRCUIT, shocked the whole world and the Peugeot itself by reaching a top speed of 217 Mph (349 Kmph), driven by Jean-Philippe Vittecocq from Michelin which is faster than a Ferrari F40.

To reach such ridiculous top speed back in '80s, the body was made from Carbon fibre and Kevlar composite designed by Peugeot's La Garenne Research centre, in France. The structure was made from Aluminium.

MODERN INTERIORS

Back in the 80's, Oxia was so futuristic with the crazy features such as

  1. Air condition even when the car is OFF. Thanks to the 18 solar panels that is just placed at the base of the windshield.

  2. Electrically adjustable seats

  3. A CD PLAYER and a Floppy disc drive, which was rare to find in a car of that time.

  4. An Adjustable Spoiler(Manual)

The interior of this car is designed by Internal Peugeot Design Team led by GERARD WALTER, the one who led the interior design of the fastest Le Mans car Peugeot WM P88 also.

NEVER WENT INTO PRODUCTION

Yes, Peugeot was unable to make Oxia into production because the period, '80s was both Iconic and a crucial time for the company. They have already invested millions in the WM P88 and the 205 T16 the company faced a huge financial crisis that they couldn't invest on Oxia. And the reason was that It took 8 million francs to build it and there was no demand for such car those days. Therefore, only two Oxia's are made.

'80s were the time when there happened a war between companies like Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini to surpass the 200 Mph barrier. However, Ferrari did it first with their F40. The Oxia could have been an easy rivalry to the cars like Ferrari F40, Porsche 959, Bugatti EB110 But that didn't happen anyways.

Hence, Peugeot Oxia is an Unsung Hero of 1988.
