Bugatti Bolide, the craziest track-only car with 1,825 bhp!

Updated: Nov 3, 2020

overview

Bugatti has unleashed its extremely track-focused lightweight hypercar, the Bugatti Bolide. The early Bugattis like Bugatti EB110, Veyron, Chiron, etc... were used to be heavy but however been the fastest cars of their time but only in a straight run. Now the company stepped up their limits in terms of speed which they usually do and in terms of performance on tracks which they usually lack. Currently, the Bolide is the lightest car from Bugatti. Is Bugatti back to Le Mans? Read on to know more...

The specs sheet is unbelievable and outrageous. The engine is the same as the ones used in the Veyron, the Chiron and the Chiron based supercars like Divo, Centodieci, La Voiture Noire, Supersport 300+, etc... The engine has undergone a huge jump on power figures with some little tweaks made to the engine such as increased maximum boost pressure with the upgraded turbochargers. This made the Bolide, the most powerful Bugatti ever with a breathtaking 1,825 hp which is almost 225 horses more than the 300+. The maximum torque produced by the Bolide is 1,850 Nm which is again a breathtaking number. What do these numbers do to the car? and the answer is a ridiculously quick acceleration and 300+ miles of top speed.

0-100 Kph 2.17 seconds
0-200 Kph 4.36 seconds
0-300 Kph 7.37 seconds
0-400 Kph 12.08 seconds
0-500 Kph 20.16 seconds
Top speed 311+ Mph

Such accelerations are unreal for any car but it seems Bugatti has made it. Thanks to the 8.0-litre W16 behemoth and 7-speed direct shift gearbox (DSG). The huge six-pistons per calliper brakes do a great job in stopping the car,

0-400-0 Kph 24.64 seconds
0-500-0 Kph 33.62 seconds

Those accelerations, top speed and the stopping power aren't actually tested on any roads but they are just computer simulation for now. The Bolide seems to follow the same formula of Minimum weight and maximum downforce like some of the track-only hypercar, the Ferrari FXX K, Aston Martin Vulcan, Aston Martin Valkyrie, Mercedes Project One, McLaren P1 GT R, etc... To those who said, Bugattis are only heavy and bad at the track, the Bolide is the perfect answer to those. As the total weight of the Bolide is just about 1,240 Kg which is almost 200 Kg lesser than the Ferrari FXX K and 100 Kg lesser than the Aston Martin Vulcan and Porsche Cayman GT4. Such lightweight is achieved by the extensive use of Carbon-fibre and Titanium. The Titanium pieces such as Rear wing mount, Wishbones used in this car is all 3D printed. The Wishbone is just about 100 gms and this is lighter than any normal smartphones but what if, I say this 100 gms part can withstand a weight of 3,700 kg that is equal to the weight of two Bugatti Chiron, yes it is. The weight saving in solid pipe structures are achieved by scooping and making them hollow from inside. The Rims at the front weigh just about 7.4 Kg and at the rear 8.4 Kg as they are made of Forged Magnesium. These rims wrapped with a highly durable Michelin Racing Slicks that are of 400mm wide at the rear and 340mm wide at the front and are capable to withstand a force of 5,300G.

The lap timings are incredible and unbelievable too as the Bolide is said to lap Nürburgring in an impartial time of 5 minutes and 23 seconds which is just 4 seconds behind the record holder, the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo. Another record set by the Bolide is a 3 minutes and 7 seconds lap time in the Le Mans circuit of de la Sarthe which is 8 seconds faster than the record qualifying lap time of Toyota TS050 Hybrid. Again these times are also declared from the so-called computer simulations.

The Aerodynamic Design of the car is the most remarkable and significant development over the Chiron. There is a huge leap between the Chiron and the Bolide in terms of top speed, accelerations, Aerodynamic design, Weight, performance, dimensions and many other aspects. The Bolide seems to be faster and quicker than the Chiron as far as the computer simulation figures say. As the Bolide is a lightweight track-focused hypercar, it weighs just about 1,240 Kg. Hence, it is 755 Kg lighter than Chiron. This is achieved by the most extensive use of Carbon-fibre like never before in any Bugattis as the external bodies of Veyron and Chiron were 10% and 30% of Carbon-fibre, respectively whereas the Bolide's external body is like 70% Carbon-fibre. The difference between these two cars is huge as the Bolide is 12 inches lower than the Chiron which is the same height as the early Bugatti, the Type 35, one of the most successful race cars.

The ethereal appearance, the Downforce, the Aerodynamic Design of the Bolide reminds us of an LMP1 racing car. The Bugatti said that the design and theme of the car are based on the alphabet "X" and is followed throughout the car. The X-shaped headlights and taillights are one of the most beautiful parts of the car that gives the car an unearthly advent of the car. The three-layered rear diffusers with French Racing Blue colour tips are something that is kind of mesmerizing and satisfying to the eyes and more beautiful than the Aston Martin Vulcan's rear diffusers.

The centre of the signature design taillight is decorated by the Quad exhaust set up. The X-shaped design covers the entire top surface also thus forming a chasm for the air to pass through the car and this helps the car run faster without any kind of obstruction with the air.

The result of pushing the engine to produce 272 hp more than the Supersport 300+ is overheating and this is dealt magnificently by the Bugatti engineers by designing some significant air intakes. There are two-layer of air intakes on both sides that draws air into the radiators. The first layer of the intake is clearly visible but the second layer is hidden just below the first as it receives air through the channel inside the door. In addition to these intakes, there is roof scoop too to draw air into the rear deck. As the car travels faster, the roof scoop receives tonnes and tonnes of air as the car moves. The upper surface of the roof scoop has a number of bubbles that helps in smoothening the air and reduce drag by 10% by inflating up to about 5mm above the surface at very high speeds but they remain flat normally at lower speeds. The aerodynamic design of the Bolide is not too far dissimilar from that of a Lotus Evija. The French Racing blue covers the body by 40% and the remaining 70% left exposed Carbon-fibre.

The Bugatti Bolide is said to meet the safety regulations of FIA (Federation Internationale de l'Automobile). While the Bugatti Pur sport is about to enter production, its a big question mark that Bolide makes it as production vehicle which will need a complete homologation similar to that of Aston Martin Vulcan.

Is Bugatti ready to enter racing in Le Mans Hypercar class? If it does, its for sure that Bolide is gonna dominate the tracks. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
